i misuse "couple of" in the same way that some people misuse "borrow/loan." which is to say, it's not a slap in the english language's face or the effect of a pisspoor education, but rather a mistranslation of the old language. [[though, one could argue that we should "really know better."]]
the epiphany came whilst enjoying tea and quarter of a cigarette on my little balcony just moments ago.
thought process: wow there's a lot of debris in my yard--> isn't it great how i have a yard--> brian, when visiting, commented on how nifty it was that there were big yards, trees, houses in the middle of the city--> isn't it weird how the mansion district [[not an official [or unofficial for that matter] neighbourhood]] became a quasi-ghetto?--> the old mansion district is just a couple of blocks west from where i work--> hmmm, i wonder why i use "couple of" to denote more than two things since old mansion district is at least four to five blocks west of lyndale--> i should write about that instead.
so now, here we are... "couple of..."
it's not my fault! i was raised in a parish consisting of old farmers that were either off the boat or born right off the boat from Scandinavia [[ok, ok... AND [ISH!] germany.]] the language and translation were sloppy!
unless using the word for "pair," any adjective/pronoun regarding a number greater than ONE in english becomes the same word in swedish. so, when learning english, i imagine the farmers just picked out the one they liked the best. granted, "a cuppla" sounds much better than "sayvayrahl." [[go ahead, sound them out... you'll get it.]]
point is, i'll try not to misuse anymore. cos really, i DO know better.
oh.. by the way, borrow and loan are the same word in Swedish, Norwegian/Danish, German, Finnish, Croation/Serbian [[ooo, i know some people that would be very upset that i just slashed those two together. and you people i say: Get Over It.]], Icelandic, Spain-Spanish, and quite possibly Polish [[though i have no idea about that one.]]
by the way, by the way... that is not the OK to use borrow and loan interchangeably. it is NOT even an excuse for those that do. [[i will beat you down if you do.]]
